Fire Emblem Engage romance options: Full list revealed

Set on the continent of Elyos, Fire Emblem Engage invites players to work with heroes new and old to defeat the Fell Dragon Sombron that plagues the land. If you know your Fire Emblem, it’s relatively standard stuff.

However, in a bid to make Fire Emblem Engage as engaging as possible (the clue's in the game name there), Nintendo and Intelligent Systems are bringing everything to the table - including a brand new gameplay mechanic that brings back classic heroes from previous games.

Fans have been eagerly waiting to find out whether Fire Emblem Engage has romance options for its cast of new and returning characters - some of the previous games have gone as far as letting characters get married and have children.

So, has the option for love and romance returned for the latest instalment of the Fire Emblem series? Read on to find out everything we know so far.

Does Fire Emblem Engage have romance?

Yes, there is romance in Fire Emblem Engage.

Eurogamer first confirmed in its review that there would be romantic options for the game's main protagonist Alear.

Henry Stockdale wrote in the review: "Support conversations are back, and Alear can increase a unit's support through sharing meals, gift-giving, and during combat. This is often where Engage's character writing shines, giving minor characters their moment, and yes, romance is back."

The review continues: "This time, any ally with A-rank support has a special scene. I can't confirm if your choice for Alear's gender changes anything, but some scenes strengthen that existing friendship instead, which is lovely."

How does romance work in Fire Emblem Engage?

In Fire Emblem Engage, you have the option to make just one other character your S-rank ally, so choose carefully before handing over the Pact Ring to declare your undying love for them.

Unlike other games in the Fire Emblem series, the new game doesn't have any gender limits when it comes to relationships - you can give any other character the Pact Ring and partner up with them.

Once you've reached S-rank, your character and ally you choose will take part in a special cut scene where they announce their love for one another. After this, you'll find an extra page in the Ally Notebook describing your life together with your chosen S-rank ally.

However, in Fire Emblem Engage, you cannot romance any character returning from previous Fire Emblem games.

And don't get too excited - not all of the S-rank special scenes are 'romantic' as such, as a few of the characters in Fire Emblem Engage are related to the protagonist or are minors, so giving these options the Pact Ring will result in a platonic but devoted friendship.

In Fire Emblem Engage, the following romance options are available. Regardless of your character's gender, you will be able to build a romance with:

• Seadall (male)

These characters below, on the other hand, will only engage in a platonic relationship:

• Alcryst
• Amber
• Anna
• Boucheron
• Celine
• Clanne
• Jean
• Linden
• Saphir
• Veyle
• Zelkov

And finally, these characters may be flirty towards you, but they will not technically become a romance:

• Framme
• Fogado
• Hortensia
• Rosado
• Timerra
• Vander
• Yunaka
